Why we Named our Daughter Indigo

I love Indi’s name, Indigo, for so many reasons. Read along to see how Indi got her name!

We had been on a mild infertility journey I describe in THIS article, when we went on a beach trip with Brad’s family to Charleston, SC. Folly Beach was the first place Brad and I vacationed, and the area holds a special place in our heart.

Brad and I are both from Greenville, SC and have a passion for our states’ history. On the last day of our trip, we went on a South Carolina history tour, something neither of us had done since we were in grade school. They told us that cotton, rice, & indigo were South Carolina’s top three crops.

Indigo dye was used to create the beautiful blue background for our state flag. Brad and I always said that SC blue was “our” color since I am a USC graduate and he is a Clemson graduate. I mentioned to Brad that “Indigo” would be a cool baby name.

Fast forward 3 weeks and I discover that I am pregnant with our first child! This baby happens to have been created on that trip to Charleston. Of course that off-handed statement about a baby name returned to our memory.

Brad and I have always loved the movie Indiana Jones and felt the nickname Indi inspired courage, adventure, and travel- all of which we want to instill in our child.

Brad and I are both very emotional, empathetic, and deep in our personal conversations and thoughts. Indigo blue evokes feelings of emotion, depth, and intensity. I suppose that is where Indigo children get their name. I know without a doubt that our child will have all of those qualities.

We chose to name “Indi” Indigo as a result of all the symbolism and signs the word meant to us. A Gamecock and Tiger coming together, a history of her origin as well as our heritage, and the place that started her parent’s relationship. I know the beautiful intensity of the color will be an accurate reflection of her spirit and soul.

With Love,
Audrey Duncan
