Although we loved our first home, Brad and I knew it was time to move onto a larger, sunnier space to allow us to grow as a family. Our last master bedroom just fit a king size bed with no room for tiny nightstands. There was 1 window in the corner, often shadowed by a giant camellia bush and dogwood. It worked as our first home, but we agreed we needed more light to sync our circadian rhythm. I wanted our room to feel like a hotel – an oasis away from life where we feel 100% comfortable. Today I am sharing my master bedroom moodboard and theme I plan to follow in designing our new oasis.
Color Scheme
I love muted dark or light blues/greens for a bedroom. However, you would never know if from my Pinterest boards. I always like, pin, and save rooms with neutrals and texture. I want our design to last for years and remain classic, so I decided to stick with beiges, whites, & blacks.
Furniture and Layout
My ideal master has 2 goals: rest & relaxation. Part of resting to me is reading, experiencing quiet, and sipping coffee. As a result, an ideal master has a cozy bed, nightstands on either side of the bed, any necessary dressers, and a seating area for reading books and newspapers- or, well, our phones. If I read in bed, I will fall asleep. I love the idea of seating by a window to enjoy coffee. In addition, a seating/work area in a quiet master reminds me of a relaxing hotel.
Like a hotel, I wanted wall sconces to frame our bed and keep nightstands clear of clutter. My ideal nightstand has a charger, candle, book, and floral decoration on it. Clutter is subconscious chaos for me so I am about that minimalist life.
Layering and Textures
Instead of “stuff” and decor to decorate and add personality to a room, I prefer texture, print, & layering. Texture is best used to create sense of hygge-inspired coziness, clean lines, and a sense of exotic worldliness. Linen is a perfect medium for bedroom texture. I always like to add a few artsy prints. Finally, layering makes a room look planned and thought-out. Think wallpaper that plays on pillows, roman shades in a neutral white under a fun printed curtain. Finally, remember that NOT everything has to match! As long as you chose it because it inspired you and you loved it, I promise it will come together.
Inspiration
Of course, when I think of a romantic master bedroom, I think of our honeymoon in Paris, France. It was a childhood dream to visit and it was truly inspiring and beautiful. My style is very French, so I wanted to play on that honeymoon inspiration for our permanent bedroom design. Next, Brad and I are total beach bums at heart, so I plan to include a sense of openness, clean beiges, and texture. Think seagrass, linen, silk, cotton, rock or natural wooden bead shapes, and more.
Master Bedroom Moodboard
Finally, below is the generic coloring and design I am aiming for for our master bedroom. This is more of a guideline for myself. Of course, design takes time. Time to save money for splurges and time to find the most functional and economical version of each piece that matches the design.
If you are looking to design your own space, begin pinning a board of inspiration. Compile and save links, images of items you love. Search each piece individually and stick to a color scheme rather than theme to make the room lasting and classic. Let me know what you think!
With Joy,
Audrey
