Since we bought our latest live and flip, I have envisioned the back room in our house as our first nursery. The large room sports three light-flooded windows from 2 walls and an adjoined bathroom. When we found out we were pregnant in early September, I immediately envisioned my dream girl and boy nursery. Of course, pink was on the horizon- figuratively and literally. With the blink of an eye, I am here with a newborn baby girl and revealing our dream nursery! Read along to see all the sources, my inspiration, and how I went about designing my dream, classic pink nursery!
The Design
Gender neutral is trending for baby girls’ rooms at the moment. However, visions of olive, black, yellow, etc. just fell short in my mind. I wanted baby girl to live and grow in a bright, airy space where she could build her own dreams. I decided that I wanted white walls so I could incorporate tons of color in her decorations. I planned to include 60% pink, 30% yellow, and 10% natural beige accents. I wanted a modern spin on florals and knew I wanted to paint her a centerpiece from the start. I chose a custom canvas over a wall mural to achieve a simpler look.
I like to design interiors with vignettes, or groupings furniture and decor. The key is to keep it simple and vary shapes and sizes. A rug or a statement piece will pull any room of varying vignettes together and make a room feel complete.
Paint Colors
Here are a few photos of the room when we moved in:
Throughout the house, we removed carpet, refinished hardwoods, replaced vent covers, mudded years of holes, and repainted the entire home. I chose Benjamin Moore “Chantilly Lace” as my wall color. It is a common white amongst interior designers and does not pull hues. I plan to incorporate color, so I decided I would paint the trim in the room, a la Julia Engel‘s nursery- but less traditional. I tested 8-9 different paint colors to find the perfect hue, saturation, and shade of pink. The winner is Benjamin Moore’s “Pleasant Pink” and was my favorite, classic pink color.
Details
I have wanted a framed Hermes scarf since I saw it on a The Everygirl Home Tour circa 2012. This feather Hermes scarf was sourced used from TheRealReal.com. I finally purchased it after finding out I was pregnant (I planned to use it in my office if I were to have a boy). The clear mount frame from Etsy.com is the perfect finishing touch. The exact product is linked at the bottom with every other detail I could think to include.
While browsing Instagram kids’ toy pages, I ran across a beautiful Scandinavian trend – elegantly curated shelf systems displaying heirlooms mixed with colorful wooden toys. I hoped my child would have plenty of both, so I ordered the shelves from Amazon.com and installed them myself with a drill, level, and the included hardware.
I first purchased the crib and then the rug to tie the room together. My living room donated the seagrass basket and it is now a toy bin. The nursing table and storage baskets were Target finds. The glider was a shower gift from all the sweet hostesses.
Heirlooms
The quilt and pillow on the glider were hand embroidered and sewn by Brad’s grandmother when he was born! I have a matching sheet and small photos as well to complete the beautiful set! Five embroidered Peter Rabbit characters will complete the look once I find some neutral hoops. I love the whimsy of Peter Rabbit and his friends and this is such a special heirloom to us. Indi actually met Mama just a few days before she passed, which makes this set even more special. I feel blessed that we got to gift Indi with so many beautiful, well-cared for heirlooms and I know she will cherish them as she grows!
The yellow chair was gifted to me as a child by my great Aunt Diane. It is a train conductor’s chair and was very chipped from years of use, so I repainted it for Indi using Good Bones Paint in the color “curry.”
The little aqua blue mint dress hanging here was my Mother’s when she was an infant. We both have a baby photo of ourselves in it, so I plan to get one of Indi once it fits her!
My Mother refurbished and gifted me the pink changing table chest. She found it on Facebook.com marketplace and gave it new life with Annie Sloan paint and vinyl transfers. See and shop more of her pieces via her Instagram. She also took an extra curtain panel the week I was due and sewed the bows and crib skirt for me at the last hour!
Finally, I worked on this painting the last 3 months of my pregnancy and into the first month at home with her. Completing it was the final piece of my nursery. I used the excess trim pink paint and the yellow chair paint to create this piece. I wanted an abstract floral piece, but as the piece developed it became the abstract realism piece it is now.
