How to Use Jade Rolling in Your Beauty Routine

Regardless of my nighttime routine, I often wake up puffy-faced with lines where the dead weight of my face dug into a pillow all night. Thank goodness for the reemergence of a 5000-year old Chinese beauty technique that I am so excited to finally share with you today: jade rolling.

Jade Rolling is a must-have for your beauty routine, drains your lymphatic system, and increases focus to your self-care. It feels incredible and is so relaxing, especially first thing in the morning.

WHAT IS A JADE ROLLER

A jade roller is a rounded paint-roller type tool made of jade, a green stone. It is said that jade absorbs negative energy and interrupts negative thought patterns. This is great in reference to your face to turn thoughts toself-care and loving your beautiful face. Next, it strengthens life force energies which I believe translate directly to an increase in circulation. Finally, it promotes love and trust. Some rollers are available in rose quartz as well, a stone known for self-care and love.

WHERE TO BUY IT

My jade roller is linked at the bottom of this post. It has a rolling end and a solid jade ball, on a spring, attached to the opposite end. The one I linked here also comes with a gua-sha tool. A gua-sha tool is contoured to fit tightly to your face and is used more for stimulating blood circulation while the jade roller is more for de-puffing and internal toxin drainage.

WHAT JADE ROLLING DOES

The lymphatic system is a part of the vascular system in our bodies that grabs toxins and waste from our muscles and moves them throughout the body. You may notice that you are super puffy when you are sick because your face is holding more liquid and toxins than normal. Your body is sending cells to kill bacteria or infection with lymphocytes. Jade Rolling is done in a manner that it encourages flow and drainage of that fluid. As we go throughout the day our face naturally drains of excess fluid through gravity, but jade rollers speed up and stimulate this process.

As a result of depuffed skin, jade rolling creates a natural contour to the cheekbones and face. The pressure of the stone against skin increases bloodflow to that area, rejuvenating the cells at skin level.

Finally, stones are not very conductive of heat, so they tend to stay cool. I keep mine in the fridge to extend this coolness. Cold on the skin encourages tiny blood capillaries to constrict. This reduces redness and can minimize eczema and skin problem caused by autoimmunity, as antibodies cannot reach the skin as easily.

LOW MAINTENANCE TOOL

As I mentioned above, I keep my jade roller in the refrigerator to enhance the cooling effect of the tool. I walk into my kitchen to drink my lemon water and jade roll while I am standing there. I clean the roller about once a week by dipping it in boiling water.

HOW TO USE A JADE ROLLER

I start on my cheekbones and roll from my nose to my hairline, jaw, or ears. The ball end of the roller is more gentle than the rolling portion, so I use it for the circles of my eyes. I like to end rolling up my nose to the top of my head. After I have gone over each part of my face THREE times. This drainage can sit in our head if we do not also stimulate the neck. I have heard of people getting headaches if they do not drain their necks. Finally, I go from underneath my chin and up my jawline. I end going down my neck, repeating each section three times.

Essentially, you are pushing ‘fluid’ out of your face, so you can envision the logical way to roll. Follow the diagram in the next three photos for more detail.

Apply an oil or serum to your face prior to use to avoid pulling skin. The rolling can also stimulate your skin to enhance absorption of skincare products. Oils and serums help protect your face from aging through the day.

I like to use an antioxidant serum in the morning. Antioxidants protect the skin by creating a first line of defense at the skin. They react with free radicals from the environment such as UVB and UVA light rays, pollutants, and other irritants that react with and kill skin cells over time.

BENEFITS OF JADE ROLLING

This process is so relaxing and is a satisfying way to start my day. I definitely see that my cheeks and jawline are more contoured on days I roll. The cooling sensation makes my eyes less puffy and my circles less noticeable. I also have reduced redness.

Let’s be real- your beautiful face doesn’t need it, but a jade roller will be your best friend next time you need to look fresh at a morning meeting or remove under eye bags fast.
